    William Edward Motzing Jr. (August 19, 1937 – January 30, 2014) was an American composer, conductor, arranger and trombonist best known for the award-winning film and television scores and gold and platinum pop album arrangements he wrote in Australia.[1] He was a jazz lecturer and the Director of Jazz Studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music over a period of 40 years.[2]

    Born in Pittsburgh, PA, William Motzing attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York,[3] alongside Ron Carter and Chuck Mangione who would also become notable musicians. He gained his bachelor's degree at Eastman in 1959, and in 1960 a master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.[4]

    He played trombone in the Eastman School of Music's Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. He married Bette Anne Loder on April 23, 1960[5] and became the youngest member of the famous Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra[3] in October of the same year. After two years he began performing with jazz groups including the Kai Winding Septet, Jon Eardley Quintet, Gerry Mulligan Big Band, Bill Russo Big Band, the Sal Salvador Big Band as well as the Radio City M

    Whilst studying at ANAM he was a founding member of the Partridge String Quartet (PSQ). As part of PSQ he performed at the Musica Viva Festival in Sydney, the BANFF Centre for Arts and Creativity, the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival and the Canberra International Music Festival. PSQ were also winners of the ANAM Chamber Music Competition and the inaugural Queensland International Chamber Music Competition. In 2020 they were selected as part of Musica Viva’s FutureMakers Program.

    In 2018 William toured with the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) in a side-by-side collaboration as an ANAM musician. In 2019 he was part of the ‘Emerging Artists’ Program of the ACO where he toured and performed with ACO musicians and was mentored by violinist Glenn Christensen. In 2021 he also performed with the Australian World Orchestra for their 10th Anniversary Season.

    William is a passionate violin teacher and co-founder of Perth Violin Studio alongside his sister and violinist Caitlin Gray where they are helping to start the next generation on their violin journeys.

    William plays on a 2020 violin made by Robert König and Michael Betcher. It is modeled on the 1713 ‘Sancy’ Stradivarius once owned by Ivry Gitlis.
