Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, was born on 6 March in Ogun State, Nigeria. He did not come from a privileged background and is said to have been the first person in his family to attend school and university.
Awolowo was a devout Christian and democratic socialist. He lost his father at a young age and worked at various times as a farmer, produce broker, teacher, typist, clerk and journalist.
