Interview: Bragi F. Schut
Tell us how you came up with adapting the narrative of LastVoyage of the Demeter?
I originally wanted to write a horror film set in space. I’m a huge fan of ALIEN and ALIENS and I wanted to try something in that same genre. But no matter what I thought up, everything just felt like an Alien ripoff. So I shelved my plans. Anyway, when I first arrived in Hollywood, I managed to get a job working in a model shop. I became friendly with the model makers and one of the guys had his portfolio and he showed it to me. He had all these wonderful miniatures in it, things from “Total Recall,” and “Edward Scissorhands,” and a bunch of other movies… and there were these photos of this fantastic schooner with bloody tattered sails. Well, they caught my eye and I asked him what they were from, and he replied, “that’s the Demeter. That’s the ship that carried Dracula from Transylvania to London. It was used for a few shots in Coppola’s Dracula movie”… and it hit me — that was my way into an alien-type story. Interview by Paul Preston
Bragi Schut has been a working writer for a decade and a half on TV shows like Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu and Threshold as well as ’s feature film Season of the Witch. His second feature, Escape Room, is enjoying a good box office run, making in one week what Season of the Witch made in its entire domestic run! We talked to Bragi about the development of this project and the other people involved.
Let’s start with your personal connection to escape rooms. Have you ever solved one in the one hour they give you to escape? I nailed the first one I ever did and it gave me false confidence. Been stumped every time since! You?
The guys at Original Film sent me to a bunch of escape rooms for research purposes. That’s the kind of homework I really like! It’s great research because you really learn how the rooms work and how puzzle-driven they are, and they’re also just plain fun. I went with Andrew Norman and Karina Rahardja, two of the producers at Original, and invited some friends to fill out the rooms a bit. You usually need four people at a minimum, so my manager Brian Spink came along on one of the rooms, my agents Bill Weinstein and Parker Davis got in on the action… Bill had such a good time tha
