Now on view in our new Dutch and Flemish galleries, "The Procuress" (or a copy of it) was once owned by the family of Johannes Vermeer. In fact, it appears in the background of two of the painter's canvases, including "The Concert"—one of 13 works stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in
In Dirck van Baburen’s “Procuress,” a male client negotiates with an elderly woman for the favors of a young lute player (the musical instrument was often a symbol of love). The man holds up a single coin, while the woman points to her palm. This explicit scene of love for sale provides a contrast with the refined musical trio in Vermeer’s “Concert.” Here, two women and a man are intensely preoccupied with their music: they do not look at each other and seem unaware that they are being observed. Could Vermeer be giving us a hint about the true nature of this gathering by putting Baburen’s painting in the background?
