    Mrs. Zalayhar Hassanali is the widow of the late President Noor Hassanali. She has been a champion for children, women, the poor and the differently-abled as well as for environmental conservation. Mrs. Hassanali was born in Siparia on the 3rd May, 1931 to seamstress Khatoon and Ali Mohammed, a tailor. She enrolled at a Presbyterian primary school and completed Naparima Girls’ High School and Naparima College, graduating at the age of 18.

    A teacher from age 20, in 1952 she married Judge Noor Mohamed Hassanali, the first Muslim Head of State in the Western Hemisphere and resided with him at the Hugh Wooding Law School during his coursework. While taking care of their two children, Khalid and Amena Hassanali, she supported the Girl Guides Association, Adult literacy, Scotiabank charities and the United Way.

    When Zalayhar’s husband became the second President of Trinidad and Tobago on March 20, 1987, she moved into the President’s House and spent the next decade campaigning for education and child welfare introducing islanders to diverse table specialities.
